After this course, you will

Skills you carry to every job

  • Design and deploy Amazon RDS and Aurora clusters with Multi-AZ, read replicas, and automated backups
  • Choose the optimal AWS database engine for each workload based on latency, scale, and access patterns
  • Configure DynamoDB tables with the right partition key, GSI, and capacity mode for predictable performance
  • Implement ElastiCache (Redis and Memcached) caching layers to eliminate database bottlenecks
  • Build graph traversal queries in Amazon Neptune and time-series queries in Amazon Timestream
  • Migrate on-premises databases to AWS using DMS with minimal downtime
  • Secure all database engines with encryption at rest, TLS in transit, and fine-grained IAM policies
  • Pass the AWS Certified Database Specialty exam

Hands-on learning

What you'll build

3 industry capstone projects · built from scratch · yours to keep

01

Multi-Engine E-Commerce Data Platform

Design the data layer for an e-commerce platform: Aurora MySQL for transactional orders, DynamoDB for user sessions and shopping carts, ElastiCache Redis for product catalogue caching, and Aurora Global Database for multi-region reads. Implement DMS migration from a MySQL on-premises source.

02

Social Graph Application with Neptune

Build a social recommendation engine using Amazon Neptune. Load a friend-of-friend graph, write Gremlin traversal queries to find mutual connections, and expose results via an API Gateway-Lambda integration. Implement Neptune backups and clone for blue-green deployments.

03

Database Disaster Recovery Runbook

Design and test a disaster recovery plan for an Aurora cluster: configure cross-region automated backups, set up an Aurora Global Database with a secondary region, execute a planned failover, measure RTO and RPO, and document the full runbook including the DMS cutover procedure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which database services are covered in this course?

The course covers Amazon RDS (all engines), Aurora, Aurora Serverless, DynamoDB, ElastiCache (Redis and Memcached), Neptune, Timestream, DocumentDB, Keyspaces, QLDB, MemoryDB for Redis, and the Database Migration Service.

Do I need to know SQL before starting?

Basic SQL knowledge (SELECT, JOIN, INDEX) is helpful for the relational database modules, but you do not need to be a DBA. NoSQL concepts are taught from the ground up.

How is the specialty exam structured?

The exam contains 65 questions (multiple choice and multiple response) across five domains: Workload-Specific Database Design, Deployment and Migration, Management and Operations, Monitoring and Troubleshooting, and Database Security. Passing score is 750 out of 1000.

Is DynamoDB capacity planning covered in depth?

Yes. On-demand vs provisioned capacity, auto-scaling, adaptive capacity, hot partition identification, and DynamoDB Accelerator (DAX) for microsecond caching are all covered with hands-on labs.

What migration tools does the course include?

AWS Database Migration Service (DMS), AWS Schema Conversion Tool (SCT), native database backup/restore, and S3 data import techniques are all covered with end-to-end migration labs.

What career paths benefit from this certification?

Database Administrators, Data Architects, Backend Engineers who design data layers, and Cloud Architects specifying data storage strategies all benefit significantly from the AWS Database Specialty certification.
